Pipe Relining: Permanent, Trenchless Drain Repair Northern Beaches

Traditionally, repairing damaged pipes often involved significant excavation and disruption to surrounding areas. Pipe relining can reduce this disruption in many cases by repairing pipes internally. At SXP, we assess each situation individually and recommend the most suitable solution. Where conditions allow, relining may be completed with minimal excavation; however, some situations may still require digging depending on access, pipe condition, and the extent of the damage.

The Pipe Relining Process:
Patch Repair Method

Our pipe relining process is designed for localised pipe repairs using a patch repair lining system. Each job is assessed individually to confirm suitability before any repair work is undertaken.

Investigation & CCTV Inspection

The process begins with identifying the cause of the blockage or pipe defect. A CCTV camera inspection is carried out to locate and assess the damaged section of pipe, such as cracks, failed joints, displaced collars, or tree root intrusion.

Drain Cleaning & Preparation

The affected section of pipe is thoroughly cleaned to remove debris, scale, and tree roots. This is typically completed using high-pressure water jetting and, where required, mechanical cleaning tools. Proper preparation is essential to ensure effective bonding of the repair liner.

Pre-Installation Inspection

Once cleaning is complete, the pipe is re-inspected with CCTV to confirm the damaged area is accessible and suitable for patch relining.

Patch Liner Installation

A resin-impregnated liner is fitted onto an inflatable packer and positioned directly over the damaged section of pipe. The packer is then inflated, pressing the liner firmly against the internal wall of the pipe.

Curing Process

The liner is left in place while the resin cures and hardens. Cure times vary depending on the resin used and site conditions. During this process, the resin bonds with the host pipe, sealing cracks, joints, or breaks.

Final Inspection

After curing, the packer is deflated and removed. A final CCTV inspection is carried out to confirm that the patch repair has been correctly installed and the affected section of pipe has been restored.

The Result

The repaired section of pipe is restored with a new liner formed within the existing pipe, reinforcing the damaged area and helping prevent further ingress at that location. This creates a sealed, structurally supported repair without replacing the entire pipe length.

Why Local Knowledge Matters for Pipe Relining

Local conditions can influence whether pipe relining is suitable and how repairs should be carried out. Factors such as pipe material, age, access points, surrounding ground conditions, and the extent of damage all affect whether patch relining is an appropriate solution. At SXP, we focus on assessing and repairing localised pipe issues using patch relining where conditions allow.

Our equipment is designed for minor, targeted relining repairs, not full-length or large-scale relining of shared sewer or stormwater systems. Each site is carefully assessed to determine whether patch relining is suitable or if an alternative repair method is required.

There will be a brief period (typically a few hours) when the drain is taken out of service to allow the resin to cure. We communicate this downtime clearly and restore full service immediately after the process is complete.
Yes, the new liner pipe is extremely durable. It is seamless and chemical-resistant, often surpassing the structural strength and resistance to root intrusion of the original pipe material.
We offer an industry-leading guarantee (usually 50 years, dependent on the product used) on the structural integrity of our liner, reflecting our confidence in the materials and our trusted installation process.
No. Relining is effective for cracks, fractures, tree root damage, and pipe joint separation. If a section of pipe is completely collapsed, we must first use targeted, minimal excavation to replace the collapsed section before relining the remaining line.
